Is January that bad?

Depressed in the dawn, originally uploaded by iiana.

Speaking to some friends the other day, they told me that statistically January and February are the most depressive months of the year!

I struggled to believe this, for me January is a great time to take stock, to think about the year ahead and to dream dreams! I feel energised in January, I tend to play more sport and make myself busy with the things I want to do.

Am I so different? Is everyone really down in these first 2 months of the new year?

I understand with the days being generally darker that many people can be a tad negative, but is there more to it than that?

Hmmm?

Nice to see you blogging again King. I've always noticed January being a tough month in schools. I think people get excited about Christmas for ages and then it never lives up to expectations. Suddenly it's a new year with short, cold days, lots of debt and the summer looks a long way away. Add to that the amount of family stress, strain and breakdown that happens over the festive period and I'm not surprised a lot of people are gloomy. What do you think?

I think that you are right Joe! As sad as it is, there is a huge amount of family stress over the Christmas period. But surely it is not meant to be like that?

In church most January's we talk of new beginnings and fresh starts, personally I find this invigorating and exciting to think that whatever happened last year i can put behind me and start again.

How can we change this Joe? WOuldn't it be great to see people excited this time of year?
